Alexis Clark weaves a spellbinding American war story illuminating not just a remarkable love story, but the unmined history of black Army nurses and German soldiers on U.S. soil during World War II.
In ENEMIES IN LOVE, Clark introduces readers to Elinor Powell, an African American woman born in a progressive suburb of Boston to an upper-middle class family and one of the few black families in the town. Elinor, who graduated among the top of her nursing school class in the Bronx in 1943, eventually enlists in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps to honor her late father who had been a Second Lieutenant in a segregated division for black soldiers in World War I. Like many black nurses in service at the time, Elinor lands a second-class assignment. She would be sent to Fort Huachuca, seventy miles outside of Tucson, where she would encounter the discrimination and horror of Jim Crow for the first time.
