June marks the 160th anniversary of the Balloon Corps, the U.S. Army's first sojourn into air-power.  On June 17, 1861, Thaddeus Lowe ascended in a state balloon, from the Columbia Armory in Washington, D.C (now he National Air & Space Museum).  He floated up to about 1,000 feet.  Lowe had two others in the balloon basket with him.  One was a telegrapher.  Lowe jotted down his brief observations of the Capital, gave same to the telegrapher, who tapped out the message.  One of the recipients was the White House. President Abraham Lincoln is the first head of state to receive an electronic message from an aircraft to the ground.
