African Americans have struggled to overcome injustice and achieve equality, and their story has been told in many ways.
The African American journey in the United States over the past few hundred years is documented by and reflected in the evolution of their music. From field hollers andcamp meetings to old spirituals, the blues, and today’s popular genres, music is themeans by which African Americans tell their stories. It is impossible to separate themusic from the story, or the story from the music. Understanding the music historyhelps us value how far we have come as a country, and how far we still have to go.
